Build Volleyball Skills During Warm Up
By Andor Gyulai, Volleyball1on1 and the JVA
Let's take a look at ways to warm up your team besides jogging, stretching and partner pepper. Every coach is looking for the secret to maximizing player improvement in limited gym time. Dan Fischer, the new University of Pittsburgh Head Women's Volleyball Coach, does just that: improves volleyball skills while warming up the team.Dan Fischer went 75-2 in his last two seasons at Concordia University. In 2011 (His first year as head coach.) Dan was named NAIA coach of the year. Last year Concordia went 38-0, winning it all and being named NAIA National Champions.
Here is one drill showing Dan's team at Concordia warming up
Following practice I spoke with Dan about his training philosophy
These drills are part of a "Reading the Game" Volleyball Practice. This is perhaps one of the hottest topics in volleyball. Additionally we spoke to Dan and filmed a second session with a local high school just to make sure that we filmed all 12 of Dan Fisher's Volleyball Warm Up Drills.
Most coaches are limited to two hours or less for their practice time, and drill selection is important in order to maximize player reps, skill improvement and team cohesiveness. Plus, incorporating drills that are run by your players without your involvement, the more time you have as a coach to watch your players, give specific feedback, and also give ownership to your players. Let's go warm-up!
