2018 JVA Junior Club Service Award Recipients

The JVA is proud to announce 14 recipients of the 2018 JVA Junior Club Service Award.

The JVA Junior Club Service Award honors junior volleyball Club Directors, Coaches and Administrators for their service to junior volleyball for at least 20 years. Read full release HERE.

The honorees listed below are currently directing, coaching or administering in a JVA member club, and were nominated by their peer(s) for their outstanding dedication to junior volleyball. The JVA is proud to acknowledge these individuals for their passion and commitment over the years.

Joel Anderson

Chicago Elite Volleyball Club Director (IL)
25 Years of Service

Joel's accolades include 2007 AAU 16U Boy's National Championship, 2008 AAU 16U Girl's 5th Place, 2016 and 2017 AAU 18U 3rd Place, 2017 AAU 14U 2nd Place, and 2017 AAU 15U National Championship. Joel has coached 125 Collegiate Athletes during his careerm along with 18 All-Americans and 26 AAU Academic All Amercians.

Seng Chiu

Grit Volleyball Club (VA) Owner and Executive Director
25 Years of Service

Seng is USAV CAP I, USAV CAP II, and USAV CAP I Beach Certified. In addition to coaching junior volleyball he was also a College Coach for over 10 years.

Katy Garza

AVA of Texas (TX) Club Co-Director
25 Years of Service

Katy is a Hall of Fame Middle Blocker for the University of Texas.  She was awarded the Robert Lindsay Award from the Lone Star Region for her outstanding contributions to service. She began the international volleyball exchange with the Stavanger Norway international trip for AVA youth. She served on the JVA Board of Directors. Katy developed a parent council to promote a positive relationship and a voice for the club parents.

Joel Golsteyn

Motion Volleyball Program (WI) Board Member and Head Coach
23 Years of Service

Joel qualified for USAV Nationals 6 times. In 2015 his team was the Chicago-Windy City National Qualifier Champions. In 2017 his team placed 19th Overall at AAU Nationals Premier Division). 

Deb Grafentin

River City Juniors (NE) Club Director
42 Years of Service

In 2017 Deb was a finalist for the Positive Coaches Alliance national award. In 2015 she recevived the AAU Double Goal Coach award. Grafentin has coached over 150 players who went on to receive college volleyball scholarships over the last few decades.

"The most important thing for us is to learn to work hard, have fun and strive for success. We're going to learn a lot about life. We're going to compete, and if we fail we just get back up and go again."

Jill Hunt

NKYVC (KY) Club Director and 15-1 Head Coach
22 Years of Service

Jill has worn many hats in junior volleyball. In 1998 her team took 5th place in AAU Nationals. She has developed/trained/facilitated training programs for U10-17 non travel players and Pre-K - 2nd Grade. She was an Assistant Recruiting Director and a Club Director, Head Coaching Director and Head Recruiting Director. In 2018 NKYVC 15-1 Tsunami placed 5th in Open at USAV Nationals. Her teams qualified at the Open Level 10 years with top 15 finishes. She coached Morgan Hentz current Libero at Stanford University and former Libero of the Year.

Kathy Kennedy

NKYVC (KY) Club Founder, Coaching Director, Board Member, Lesson Instructor
33 Years of Service

Kathy has many years of experience as a head coach for NKJV, NWBD and NKYVC. She was Club Founder/Club Director/Head Coach for KVT Rockets in Cincinnati, Ohio. from 1996-2001. She is Club Founder/Coaching Director/Board Member for NKYVC from1999-present. She has helped place over 200 athletes in their college of choice. Kathy was instrumental in starting NKYVC's boy's program in 2002. She also created a Training Team Program to give opportunities for non travel players to train. She also created a training program for Pre-K - 2nd Grade, Her teams have qualified in Open 8 times including a 3rd, 5th, 7th & 10th place finish. 

Max Miller

Mintonette Sports (OH) Director and Owner
22 Years of Service

A Founder of Mintonette Sports in 2006, Max is in his 2nd Year as a College Coach at UNOH. He has 20 Years of experience coaching at the High School level. In 2017 his team won the USAV 16 Open Championship. In 2013 his team won the USAV 12 American Championship. He won the Ohio HS State Championship in 2011, and is an 11 Time HS District Champion.  His teams have qualified for USAV Open Division Championships 14 times. Max was honored as District Coach of the Year 5 times, in addition to 4x Ohio High School Final 4 and 2x Ohio High School State Finalist.

Jimmy Miranda

Louisiana Volleyball (LA) Owner and Coach
32 Years of Service

Jimmy was the CBVA Director of Grass Volleyball in Ventura County. He won 3 State of Louisiana High School Championships. Jimmy has received Outstanding Service Award from AAU President, Roger Goudy. He was USAV Bayou Region Board of Director for Coach Education and served on the JVA Board of Directors as AAU/JVA Liaison. He is the AAU Volleyball Chairperson for Alabama and Tennessee.  His club teams have won 7 National Titles. Jimmy has coached all 4 of his daughters in High School. He also coached his team to an AAU Championships in the Club Division. In his career Jimmy has worked with over 1500 athletes. He Co-Created a Mental Training Program called PEP (Peak Effective Performance) that his club utilizes each season to enhance their athletes' mental training.

Kimberly Norman

High Country Volleyball Club (UT) CEO and Head Technical Coach
30 Years of Service

Kim was the 2018 Region 6 Coach of the Year in the Salt Lake School District after her Her West High School program was 2018 Region 6 Champions,. She won State High School Championships in 1996 and 1997 at Highland High School. She won 2 Conference Championships at Westminster College. In addition to juniors, Kim coached the Utah Unity professional Women's Team, and was an American Samoan youth girls Coach. She is a distinguished Service Honoree and Hall of Fame inductee. Kim has helped coach and produce mulitple high level athletes, inluding Olympic Medalist Logan Tom

Eric Schulze

VC United (IL) Executive Director
20 Years of Service

Eric has 10 Top 5 finishes in 18 Open at USAV and AAU Nationals. He is the original web designer of PrepVolleyball.com and original staff member of Club Fusion. He assisted in growing Club Fusion to one of largest clubs in the country. Eric founded VC United in 2017 with 34 teams in its first season. In addition, Eric is a former member of the Great Lakes Region Board of Directors. He has presented at the AVCA Convention and coached over 160 Division I athletes. 

Lynda Scahill

Pittsburgh Elite (PA) Founder, Recruiting Coordinator and 14 Elite Head Coach
29 Years of Service

Lynda is the Founder of Pittsburgh Golden Triangles in 1989 (now called Pittsburgh Elite. Her club teams have earned bids to Nationals 15+ years. She trained the first full scholarship female student-athlete at Duquesne University. In 2007 Lynda was Inducted into the Pennsylvania Coaches Volleyball Hall of Fame.

Eric Shick

Magnum Volleyball (SC) Club Director & Coach
20 Years of Service

Eric has played an instrumental role for over 20 years in the Columbia, South Carolina area. He has been coaching volleyball since 1997 as a student coach with the University of South Carolina Gamecocks under Head Coach Kim Hudson. Eric began coaching Club volleyball as he coached for Gamecock Juniors (the only club in Columbia at the time) for 2 years. His high school team won the SCISA Class 3A Upper Region in his first season as Head Coach. He won two 5A region titles, and placed 3rd in the state coaching at White Knoll High School.  Placed 3rd in the State 2 years in a row at Lexington High School which is where he currently coaches. He took the Timberwolves to a 3rd place finish in the state playoffs in 2015, then region championship in 2017.

Christy Sitze

Power Up Volleyball (IL) Club Owner/Director
21 Years of Service

In 2015 Christy received the USA Volleyball Iowa Region Outstanding Program Director Award. She is the creator and Director of Power Up Tournament Series, the largest club tournament series in Northwest Illinois. She has coached numerous athletes that have had success at all levels of collegiate volleyball, including DI and DII. When coaching travel teams early in her career, her teams have placed top 10 in the Great Lakes Power League, top 5 at large national qualifiers, and top 3 at Nationals. As a Head Varsity Coach at Oregon High School, Christy has won 7 IHSA Regional Titles, 5 trips to the the Sectional Finals, 1 Sectional Championship, and close to 200 wins in 9 years As a Head Women's Coach of NCAA DIII for 2 seasons, her team became nationally ranked for blocking, doubled its season wins and had its first All-Conference selection in 7 years. Christy started a club that serves close to 100 players a season that caters to multi-sport athletes in Northwest Illinois and makes club volleyball more accessible to players in small towns. She has trained 3 beach volleyball teams (2 girls teams, 1 boys team) that earned bids to USAV Beach Nationals in the first season of offering a beach volleyball program.  In addition, she won SVN Coach of the Year in 2006 for her high school season.
